Global energy markets experienced significant volatility as oil prices surged following the outbreak of hostilities between the U.S., Israel, and Iran, largely fueled by anxieties surrounding a potential closure of the Strait of Hormuz. However, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) has since retreated to approximately $85 per barrel—cooling from a three-year peak near $120 reached on Monday—following remarks from the Trump administration and reports of a potential G7 coordinated strategic reserve release. Despite this reprieve, the ongoing conflict ensures that market sentiment remains fragile, with any shift toward risk aversion likely to reinvigorate the U.S. Dollar's (USD) strength as a primary safe-haven asset.
Simultaneously, the United States labor market delivered a profound structural shock in February. The latest Non-Farm Payrolls (NFP) report revealed a surprising contraction of 92,000 positions, starkly contradicting the consensus forecast that had anticipated a gain of 59,000 jobs. Consequently, the unemployment rate edged higher to 4.4%, though it remains just beneath the 4.5% threshold the Federal Reserve projected for 2026. Despite this visible cooling in the labor force, consumer spending remains remarkably robust. The Census Bureau reported that Retail Sales hit $733.5 billion in January, defying the forecasted 0.3% decline with a 3.2% year-over-year expansion.
Federal Reserve officials are navigating these diverging data points with extreme caution. Susan Collins (Boston Fed) emphasized the need for "definitive evidence" of disinflation before pivoting toward rate cuts, while Mary Daly (San Francisco Fed) characterized the labor data as "disappointing," signaling that the Fed will likely maintain its "wait-and-see" posture for the immediate future.
Across the Pacific, confidence indicators in Australia have recently delivered a bifurcated reading on the health of the domestic economy. On one hand, the Westpac Consumer Sentiment Index climbed by 1.2% in March, marking a notable recovery after two consecutive months of decline. Conversely, the NAB Business Confidence Index retreated to -1 in February, marking its first foray into negative territory since April of the previous year. Despite this dip in sentiment, the NAB Business Conditions Index remained steadfast at 7, suggesting that underlying corporate activity maintains a degree of structural stability.
The Australian Dollar (AUD) continues to derive fundamental support from a surge in sovereign bond yields, with the 10-year government bond recently ascending toward the 5% mark—its highest level since July 2011. This upward trajectory occurs against a backdrop of escalating geopolitical tensions, driving energy costs higher and reigniting global inflationary anxieties. Consequently, the market is increasingly pricing in a scenario where the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) maintains an aggressively restrictive stance. RBA Governor Michele Bullock reaffirmed that the institution remains “highly vigilant” regarding the conflict's impact on inflation expectations and stands prepared to implement further rate hikes if economic conditions dictate.Bearish Impulse May Stem from Local Resistance Rejection_1

          Technical Analysis

From a technical perspective, the AUD/USD pair encountered a supply wall at the 0.7148 resistance handle, a level that has historically triggered bearish reactions since mid-February. This rejection suggests the inception of a corrective phase, with a primary downside objective at the local ascending trendline near 0.6985.
It is important to note that the broader bullish structure remains intact as long as the price does not establish a series of lower lows. Structurally, the 100 and 200-period Moving Averages (MAs) are currently situated at 0.7064 and 0.7036, respectively. Should the price action secure a decisive close beneath this moving average cluster, we could see an acceleration of the current downward impulse.
Our analysis of momentum oscillators reinforces this potential for a pivot. The RSI on the 4-hour chart recently struck the 66 level, approaching overbought territory and signaling a dissipation of bullish conviction. Simultaneously, while the MACD signal lines and histogram initially showed a sharp increase in depth, the histogram has now begun to contract. A sustained transition of the signal lines below the neutral threshold would provide the necessary technical validation for a more extended move to the downside. Given the confluence of resistance and fading momentum, sell-side positions are increasingly favored in the short term.
