During Tuesday's Asian session, the Australian dollar extended its weakness against the U.S. dollar, falling to its lowest level in two and a half months. As market expectations regarding the Reserve Bank of Australia's policy outlook have shifted, the current decline could represent only the initial phase of a broader correction.

With Australia's economic momentum slowing and global energy prices retreating from recent highs, overnight index swap markets are no longer fully pricing in additional rate hikes, suggesting that the RBA's tightening cycle has most likely reached its end.

In contrast, markets expect the Federal Reserve to deliver at least one more rate hike this year, making the divergence between U.S. and Australian monetary policy increasingly apparent.

Just two months ago, investors were widely betting on two additional RBA rate hikes while expecting the Fed to remain on hold. Those expectations have now completely reversed. Although RBA officials reiterated this month that further tightening remains possible if necessary, investors generally believe that slowing economic growth and lower oil prices have significantly raised the bar for additional rate hikes. In the short term, the Australian dollar may continue to face pressure from narrowing yield differentials and weakening risk appetite.

Technical Analysis

On the 4-hour chart, AUD/USD remains within a descending channel and is currently showing signs of approaching the lower boundary. The key support below lies at the 38.2% Fibonacci retracement level. A break below this level could trigger another wave of declines. The key resistance above is located at 0.7000, which coincides with the lower boundary of the ascending channel on the daily chart. AUD/USD has already broken below the daily ascending channel, but whether it can stabilize below this level still requires further confirmation.

From an indicator perspective, both the Base Line and Conversion Line of the Ichimoku Cloud are clearly trending downward, highlighting the strength of the current bearish momentum. Although the current candlestick is trading below both lines and showing signs of a rebound, the strong downward trend suggests that AUD/USD may experience another decline before resuming an upward move. Meanwhile, in the ADX indicator, the ADX line is trending higher, while the +DI and -DI are diverging.
