A window forward lets you choose when to take delivery within agreed limits. Use a €250,000 example to compare its fixed quote with a dated forward and a two-leg FX swap, then see what happens if part of the payment disappears.
A window FX forward addresses uncertainty about when you need the currency. It still commits you to the agreed amount by the final delivery date. If you expect to pay €250,000 but the date might move, a delivery window can absorb that timing change. If the bill might shrink to €200,000, the remaining €50,000 is a separate exposure. The value of the window depends on the cost of moving a fixed-date hedge and on which dates the contract actually permits.

A fixed-date forward specifies the currency amounts and a value date at booking. A window forward allows delivery on eligible dates in a defined period. A contract can permit several drawdowns, subject to notice and minimum-size rules. The pricing can be a single rate or a schedule agreed at booking. Check which convention appears on the confirmation and what happens if no drawdown instruction arrives before the cutoff.
Use the same trade direction throughout the comparison. An importer buying euros with dollars needs EUR/USD quotes expressed as dollars per euro. When a swap offsets one euro purchase and creates another, record the actual euro-sale price for the offsetting leg and the actual euro-buy price for the new leg. Mid-market prices can misstate the cost because the sale and purchase execute on different sides of the spread.
Assume an importer must buy €250,000. Its fixed-date buy quotes are 1.0820 for the early date and 1.0832 for the late date. The single-rate window quote is 1.0836. Every quote is hypothetical. The dates are eligible settlement days. The fixed and window rates are quoted at booking. The swap rates are hypothetical prices at the later time when the payment date changes, with a separate swap scenario for each direction. One EUR/USD pip costs or saves USD 25 on this amount. The totals below add nominal cash flows across dates and omit funding, fees and collateral costs.
| Hedge at booking | Payment falls on early date | Payment falls on late date |
|---|---|---|
| Window at 1.0836 | $270,900 | $270,900 |
| Fixed early at 1.0820 | $270,500 | $270,950 with an extension |
| Fixed late at 1.0832 | $270,600 with an advance | $270,800 |
Extension. The importer already buys euros early at 1.0820. It sells the same euros early at 1.0770 and buys them back for late delivery at 1.0788. The early purchase and sale leave a $1,250 net outflow on the early date. The late leg costs $269,700. Together the legs cost $270,950, equivalent to 1.0838 per euro before financing and fees. Netting here is an economic calculation. If the two early trades settle gross, the importer may need to fund the original purchase before receiving the sale proceeds.
Advance. The importer already buys euros late at 1.0832. It adds an early buy at 1.0812 and a late sell at 1.0820. The early buy costs $270,300. On the late date the original buy and the offsetting sell leave a $300 net dollar outflow. Total cost is $270,600, equivalent to 1.0824.
The window costs $400 more than the early forward if delivery stays early. With the example extension, the window saves $50. The early forward breaks even with the window when the extension adds 0.0016 USD per euro, or 16 pips, before other costs. A 15-pip extension leaves the dated strategy cheaper. A 17-pip extension makes the window cheaper. The $50 advantage in the extension scenario can disappear once fees or funding differ. To move the late forward earlier, compare the early euro-buy rate minus the late euro-sale rate with the window premium over the late forward, which is 4 pips here. The quoted advance spread is −8 pips, so the advanced fixed-date hedge costs $300 less than the window.
If the confirmation permits partial drawdowns, buying €100,000 early at 1.0836 costs $108,360 and buying €150,000 late costs $162,540. The two payments use the entire €250,000. The combined cost remains $270,900 in the single-rate example.
If the invoice falls to €200,000 instead, the unused €50,000 still has to be dealt with. Suppose it is taken at maturity for $54,180 and sold for same-day value at an executable 1.0700 bid. The sale returns $53,500, giving a $680 loss on the excess euros before fees. The actual cost can differ if the bank agrees to an unwind on other terms or if funding or settlement dates differ. If the invoice arrives after the final eligible date, the window also ceases to match the cash flow. Buying early and holding euros or arranging a further roll changes funding and execution costs.
