A fixing order gives you a price tied to an agreed benchmark. Compare that price plus fees with the volume-weighted result of splitting the order, and keep the move from the arrival quote separate.
An FX fixing order lets a buyer or seller agree in advance which exchange-rate benchmark will determine the trade price. The rate is known when the benchmark is published. Before committing, the client can compare the quoted markup, cash fee and fallback terms. The lowest realised cost depends on the market path and the prices the full order can actually obtain.

This distinction matters when a portfolio values its currency exposure at a designated fix. A trade priced close to that fix can limit the difference between the portfolio’s valuation rate and its conversion rate. A different execution strategy might achieve a better cash result on the day and still introduce more uncertainty about the gap to the benchmark.
Start with the named benchmark, pair, date, local time and rate type. The mid, bid and offer are different inputs. A benchmark may calculate its rate from eligible market observations in a window around a named time, with its own sampling, validation and fallback rules. A chart price at that minute cannot reconstruct the published fix on its own. A central bank’s informational reference rate serves a different purpose from a benchmark incorporated into an agreed execution price.
Ask how the service is priced and in what capacity the provider acts. In a principal arrangement the provider may commit to the benchmark plus or minus an agreed adjustment, while managing the market risk separately. The customer’s trade confirmation is governed by the agreed terms. The FX Global Code calls for transparent fixing-order pricing consistent with the risk taken. It also calls for safeguards against intentionally influencing the benchmark for the provider’s benefit.
Suppose a client buys EUR 2 million for dollars on a single spot value date. The arrival midpoint is 1.08420 USD per EUR. The agreed benchmark mid prints at 1.08510. The fixing order is priced 1.2 pips above the benchmark, with a separate USD 60 fee. Here one pip is 0.0001 USD per euro, worth USD 200 on the full order. All prices and fees are illustrative.
| Item | USD per EUR | Dollar amount |
|---|---|---|
| Arrival midpoint | 1.08420 | 2,168,400 |
| Agreed benchmark mid | 1.08510 | 2,170,200 |
| Confirmed trade before the cash fee | 1.08522 | 2,170,440 |
| Confirmed trade with the USD 60 fee | 2,170,500 |
The cash cost is USD 300 above the fixing benchmark. It comprises a USD 240 price adjustment and the USD 60 fee. Against the earlier arrival midpoint the difference is USD 2,100, of which USD 1,800 comes from the difference between the two reference rates. A midpoint at arrival gives context for the decision. It does not demonstrate that the full amount was available at that price.
On a sale, reverse the price subtraction. An execution price below the benchmark reduces the dollars received. Count that shortfall and the separate cash fee as positive costs. If a markup is already built into the confirmed exchange rate, account for it through that rate once.
Imagine another execution on the same value date. The three fills are EUR 500,000 at 1.08470, EUR 1 million at 1.08518 and EUR 500,000 at 1.08536. The correct average weights the prices by the amounts traded. Those fills cost USD 2,170,210 at a weighted rate of 1.085105. Add USD 120 of fees and the order costs USD 2,170,330, which is USD 130 above the benchmark and USD 170 below the fixing order.
To match the fixing order’s all-in cash cost, subtract the split strategy’s USD 120 fee from USD 2,170,500 and divide the result by EUR 2 million. The break-even weighted fill is 1.08519, or 0.9 pips above the fix. If the split trade averages 1.08530, the all-in cost rises to USD 2,170,720, which is USD 220 higher than the fixing order. The threshold explains how much execution room each fee schedule leaves. The fix and split fills are only known afterwards.
