The same EUR 100,000 round trip can incur USD 5.50 or USD 30 in commission under a hypothetical minimum-per-order tariff. Reconcile chargeable units, both sides, rounding and execution improvements before choosing an order size.
A lower commission rate does not establish the cost of a small forex order. A minimum charge can dominate the percentage calculation. If each child order is charged separately, splitting the same EUR 100,000 purchase and sale into ten orders per side can raise commission from USD 5.50 to USD 30 under the illustrative tariff below. The currency amount has not increased; the number of minimum charges has.
That is a conditional cost result, not a recommendation to submit one large market order. Splitting may change execution prices, timing and completion. First identify the actual chargeable unit, then compare fees and completed prices in the same currency. Several fills belonging to one parent order do not automatically create several minimum commissions.

Assume a USD account trading EUR/USD, quoted in dollars per euro. The invented tariff charges each independent filled order on each side the larger of USD 1.50 and 0.25 basis point of its dollar traded value. Round the resulting charge to the nearest cent for each order. Opening and closing are charged separately; there are no financing charges, taxes or other fees in this example.
A basis point is 0.01%, so 0.25 basis point is 0.0025%, or 0.000025 as a multiplier. It is not 0.25%, 0.25 pip or a charge on margin. For a euro quantity q executed at price p, dollar traded value is q×p and the model commission before cent rounding is max(1.50, 0.000025×q×p).
These terms are assumptions to be tested against an account’s tariff. Another arrangement may charge by lot, aggregate a parent order, apply a daily minimum, include costs in the exchange rate, or quote a round-trip fee. A per-side price must not be confused with the amount for opening and closing together.
Keep the midpoint unchanged at 1.10000. All buys execute at the ask of 1.10010 and all sales at the bid of 1.09990, with enough available quantity and identical timing and value date across alternatives. Every plan buys and then sells exactly EUR 100,000. This isolates fee arithmetic; it does not predict that these prices will remain available.
The bid–ask price loss is 100000×(1.10010−1.09990)=USD 20 in every plan. One pip is 0.0001 USD per EUR, so the completed EUR 100,000 amount is worth USD 10 per pip. In the one-order plan, raw opening commission is USD 2.75025 and closing commission USD 2.74975; each rounds to USD 2.75.
| Orders on each side × EUR per order | Round-trip commission, USD | Bid–ask loss, USD | Total cost, USD | Full-amount equivalent, pips |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 × 100000 | 5.50 | 20.00 | 25.50 | 2.55 |
| 2 × 50000 | 6.00 | 20.00 | 26.00 | 2.60 |
| 5 × 20000 | 15.00 | 20.00 | 35.00 | 3.50 |
| 10 × 10000 | 30.00 | 20.00 | 50.00 | 5.00 |
Each row starts afresh. Two EUR 50,000 orders have a percentage charge just below the USD 1.50 minimum, so each side costs USD 3. Ten EUR 10,000 orders each face the floor, making USD 15 per side and USD 30 for the round trip. The rate has not changed; its effective cost per unit has.
Total cost here is the price loss already embedded in the executed ask and bid plus the separately posted commissions. Do not add another two-pip spread after calculating the USD 20 price loss. Nor should the commission be added twice if a statement’s net trade result already deducts it.
Before cent rounding, the percentage amount equals the floor when dollar traded value is 1.50/0.000025=USD 60,000 per chargeable order. At a reference price of 1.10000, that is about EUR 54,545.45. The actual buy and sell prices produce slightly different euro cutoffs.
This threshold describes when the fee floor stops dominating. It is not a minimum permitted trade size, a funding requirement, a margin calculation or an optimal position size. Quantity increments, actual fill prices and the tariff’s rounding rule matter near the boundary.
A simple fee-per-lot estimate from one large transaction therefore need not price a smaller order. The USD 10 pip value used above also belongs to this specific EUR/USD quantity and USD account. Other pairs, quantities or account currencies require their own pip-value and fee-conversion calculation.
The ten-order plan adds USD 24.50 of commission against the one-order plan. For the completed EUR 100,000 amount, the combined quantity-weighted improvement across entry and exit must exceed 24.50/10=2.45 pips to overcome that disadvantage. It is the combined price improvement, not 2.45 pips required separately on each side.
| Combined price improvement, pips | Price saving, USD | Extra commission, USD | Net benefit of splitting, USD |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.00 | 0.00 | 24.50 | −24.50 |
| 1.80 | 18.00 | 24.50 | −6.50 |
| 2.45 | 24.50 | 24.50 | 0.00 |
| 2.60 | 26.00 | 24.50 | +1.50 |
The table varies execution improvement independently while retaining the stated minimum-fee regime for the small child orders. An improvement of 1.80 pips saves USD 18 but still leaves the split route USD 6.50 worse. At 2.60 pips it saves USD 26, leaving only USD 1.50 after the extra fees. Exactly 2.45 pips is a tie within this restricted model.
Use the executable price for the full forex order rather than the best displayed quote when evaluating that improvement. Compare the same completed quantity, direction, value date and timing convention. Better prices on a partially filled order do not price the unfilled remainder.
Splitting does not itself create the assumed improvement. Delay, disappearing liquidity, rejection and price movement can change the result. If actual prices or quantities change materially, recompute notional-based fees, conversion and other costs instead of preserving the illustrative fee difference mechanically.
Suppose one parent order receives ten partial fills. If its documented tariff applies one minimum to the parent total, multiplying the minimum by ten would overstate commission. Conversely, ten separately submitted and independently charged orders cannot be combined after the fact merely because they serve one currency requirement.
Retain parent order IDs, child order IDs, execution IDs, amendments and actual fee entries. Determine whether the charge applies to an order, a fill, a ticket or another documented unit. Do not infer the rule from the number of rows on a trade export. Changes or overnight continuation can have special treatment, but no universal rule should be assumed.
As a counterfactual, remove the minimum while keeping the same notional rate. Splitting then leaves the underlying proportional charge unchanged at matched prices, apart from effects of per-order rounding. Likewise, an aggregated parent-level floor can remove the repeated-minimum mechanism. The headline conclusion fails when its fee-unit assumption fails.
Obtain the tariff applicable to the actual product, account and volume tier. Record the fee currency, notional basis, rate, minimum, chargeable unit, side convention, rounding stage and any conversion. A quoted zero commission can still involve a different exchange-rate arrangement; compare the resulting cash rather than assigning every route this fee model.
For each documented chargeable unit, use its executed quantity and price, calculate the proportional fee, apply the minimum and rounding, and sum both sides. If the account currency differs, reconcile the conversion rate and debit amount as well. Converting the total once may differ from converting and rounding each fee separately.
Then match the complete currency amount and all posted charges to the statement. Keep unfilled quantities, future funding costs and timing exposure explicit. A smaller recorded fee is not evidence that a currency requirement was completed more cheaply.
Only after that reconciliation compare alternative order plans. A minimum commission can make small independent orders expensive, but liquidity, price control, completion and the size of the underlying exposure remain separate decisions. The useful output is a reproducible cost difference and the execution improvement needed to reverse it.
