The USD/CAD pair took a significant hit during North American trading hours on Thursday, falling sharply towards the critical 1.4200 mark as the US Dollar (USD) faced broad-based weakness. The Greenback’s underperformance was further exacerbated by the release of slightly higher-than-expected US Initial Jobless Claims data, adding pressure to an already fragile sentiment surrounding the currency.
At the heart of the USD's struggles was the latest report from the US Department of Labor, which indicated that 219,000 individuals filed for jobless benefits for the first time in the week ending February 14. This came in higher than the consensus estimate of 215,000. Although the increase in jobless claims was relatively modest, it has raised concerns over the health of the US labor market, particularly as the economy is navigating the challenges of higher inflation and interest rates.
The disappointing jobless claims data was the latest in a series of developments that have dented confidence in the US Dollar. The currency had already been underperforming its major peers, and this was compounded by ongoing geopolitical tensions. In a striking move on Wednesday, US President Donald Trump suggested the possibility of imposing tariffs on a range of products, including automobiles, semiconductors, and pharmaceuticals, within the next month. Markets reacted swiftly, with fears that such measures could escalate into a full-blown global trade war, ultimately slowing global economic growth.
The broader risk sentiment remains cautious, particularly as investors await further developments on Trump's tariff agenda. A potential trade conflict, especially one involving key sectors such as technology and automotive industries, could disrupt international supply chains and exacerbate inflationary pressures worldwide. Given these risks, market participants are bracing for a possible slowdown in global economic activity, which could have far-reaching consequences for currency markets.
In addition to the tariff concerns, the US Dollar has also been weighed down by hawkish comments from the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) minutes, released earlier this week. The minutes from the January meeting revealed that Fed officials were increasingly concerned about growing upside risks to inflation, driven in part by the potential economic impacts of Trump’s protectionist policies. The committee’s cautious stance on interest rate cuts also failed to provide much-needed support for the USD, with market participants now questioning how long the Fed will be able to maintain its current monetary policy in the face of rising inflationary pressures.
During the January policy meeting, the Federal Reserve kept interest rates unchanged within the 4.25%-4.50% range, signaling that it was in no rush to ease policy. However, the minutes revealed a growing recognition that inflationary pressures could persist for longer than previously anticipated, particularly if global supply disruptions worsen due to trade-related tensions. This has left the US Dollar vulnerable to further downside risks, as investors adjust their expectations for future interest rate decisions.
On the Canadian front, the outlook for the CAD is somewhat more optimistic. Investors are looking ahead to the upcoming release of Canadian Retail Sales data for December, set to be released on Friday. Market consensus expects a month-on-month increase of 1.6% in retail sales, following a flat performance in November. Given that consumer spending is a key driver of the Canadian economy, this data will be closely watched for insights into the health of Canada’s domestic demand. If the retail sales numbers come in stronger than expected, it could provide some additional support for the Canadian Dollar, especially in the context of ongoing USD weakness.
Technical AnalysisUSD/CAD Dips Sharply as US Dollar Underperforms, Fed Concerns and Jobless Claims Weighing on Sentiment_1
The technical picture for USD/CAD suggests that the pair is currently in a bearish phase, with intraday sentiment pointing to further downside risks. After a prolonged period of sideways consolidation, the currency pair recently broke key support levels, signaling the potential for further declines. The failure to sustain upward momentum, particularly after a brief spike caused by Trump's tariff announcement in early February, has fueled bearish expectations for the near-term outlook.
The key resistance level to watch is 1.4260. Should the pair stage an oversold rally from its current levels, a rejection at 1.4260 could open the door to additional downside targets. If the pair breaks below 1.4200, the next support levels to watch are 1.4150, followed by 1.4100, and 1.4025 over the longer-term horizon.
On the other hand, should USD/CAD manage to break above the 1.4260 resistance level, a confirmed daily close above this threshold would negate the bearish outlook, suggesting a potential for a rally. In that case, traders would then look for a retest of 1.4300 resistance, with further targets at 1.4350 and 1.4400.
As of now, the price action has been constrained by the 50-period Exponential Moving Average (EMA50), which has acted as resistance, preventing a continuation of the upward move.
