Natural gas futures rise, but end off their highest levels of the day, gaining 2.8% to $3.851 per mmBtu. Geopolitical upheaval is creating concerns about global supply chains, though analysts are unsure if natural gas prices have a damper on them. "It's possible tariff and geopolitical issues are influencing natural gas trade to some extent but difficult to know with any certainty," says NatGasWeather.com in a note. (kirk.maltais@wsj.com)
Energy stocks gained late Tuesday afternoon with the NYSE Energy Sector Index adding 1.3% and the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE) rising 1.1%.
The Philadelphia Oil Service Sector index climbed 0.6%, and the Dow Jones US Utilities index eased 0.2%.
Oil prices rose after President Donald Trump called for an evacuation of Tehran. "Simply stated, IRAN CAN NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON," Trump said in a social media post.
West Texas Intermediate crude oil jumped 4.7% to $73.53 a barrel, and global benchmark Brent surged 4.8% to $76.71 a barrel. Henry Hub natural gas futures rose 3.3% to $3.87 per 1 million BTU.
In sector news, the International Energy Agency reduced its projections for global oil demand growth for 2025 and 2026, while highlighting geopolitical uncertainties as a substantial risk to supply security.
In corporate news, Comstock Resources shares jumped 8.3% after Wolfe Research upgraded the stock to outperform from peer perform.
Enphase Energy shares fell 24%, SolarEdge tumbled 33%, and Sunrun slumped 40% after the US Senate Finance Committee reportedly proposed phasing out solar and wind energy tax credits by 2028 as part of changes made to President Donald Trump's tax-cut and spending bill.
Chevron's USA unit acquired two leasehold acreage positions to enter the domestic lithium sector. Chevron shares added 1.6%.
Shell's LNG Canada project attracts buyers mainly because it uses the Canadian Alberta Energy Co., or AECO, price index as a benchmark, which is lower than the Henry Hub price in the US, Reuters reported, citing Shell Chief Executive Officer Wael Sawan. Shell shares rose 1.1%.
Crude oil futures rise as the conflict between Israel and Iran creates questions about the accessibility of oil supplies should it increase in severity. But traders and analysts see the upside as limited for crude oil. That's because the world is expected to remain 'well-supplied' this year, according to a report from the IEA. As a result, apparent speculation that oil prices could surge back over $100 a barrel for the first time since mid-2022 is being met with doubts, says Robert Yawger of Mizuho Securities USA in a note. Most-active WTI prices settle up 4.3% to $74.84 a barrel and Brent for August delivery gains 4.4% to $76.45. (kirk.maltais@wsj.com)
Concerns about New World Screwworm, a parasite that infests open wounds on animals such as cattle and hogs, appear to be building as livestock producers fear claims that the disease is approaching the U.S.-Mexico border. Last month, the World Organisation of Animal Health reported cases of screwworm being found in animals in Oaxaca or Veracruz. That's roughly 700 miles away from the border, which prompted Agricultural Secretary Brooke Rollins to suspend live animal imports over the border last month. But this suspension hasn't quelled fears. This is being reflected in cattle and hog prices, with live cattle down 2.4% to $2.11175 a pound and lean hogs down 0.9% to $1.12 a pound. Gene-edited crops can enable disease and pest resistance, says Corteva CEO Chuck Magro, helping decrease or even eliminate the need for chemical pesticides. The challenge is getting these scientifically altered crops approved by regulators around the world — the crop trade's global nature means that they need to be able to easily cross borders. Magro says at the WSJ Global Food Forum in Chicago that Corteva has a multidisease resistant corn variety a year or two away from planting. "We're on the doorstep." (annie.gasparro@wsj.com)
