Modi’s appeals are entirely a move for import compression. Because India imports almost 90% of its retail gold, it drains their U.S. dollar reserves. @Eon
@RPGFX but that is a thing, why would you encourage people to secure their wealth in dollars when the country where dollars are used has huge debt and inflation is eating up their wealth. China currency has been very strong and economy is growing despite high oil price

But for India, the issue is structural, they can not just switch to the Yuan because of massive geopolitical rivalry with Beijing. Plus, while China's export machine is booming, their domestic economy is actually struggling heavily with a massive property crash and deflation. @Eon

As messy as US inflation and debt are, the dollar remains the only deep market where India can easily liquidate billions to pay for oil and trade overnight@Eon
