Data Interpretation: This is a measure of core inflation calculated by the Cleveland Fed from data released in the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)' monthly CPI report. The median CPI, which is classified as a truncated mean measure, essentially removes 49.5% of the weight from each end of the weighted monthly price change distribution to obtain the median or intermediate component of the price change. Research shows that extreme price changes tend to be temporary and thus mask underlying, persistent inflation trends, while adjustments help improve inflation signals in the monthly CPI data.
