Japan Slips to Fourth in Global Economy Ranking as Yen Bucks Downward Trend

          Warren Takunda
          Summary:

Japan's GDP contraction signals a technical recession, yet the yen strengthens against the dollar. Weak domestic demand and global slowdown pose challenges. Bank of Japan's policy adjustments loom. Technical analysis hints at continued bullish momentum for USD/JPY.

The Japanese yen has shown resilience in the face of economic headwinds, climbing despite a disappointing GDP report released on Thursday. As of the North American session, USD/JPY is trading at 150.12, marking a 0.31% decline. Despite a significant dip of 0.70% earlier in the day, the pair has managed to recover a substantial portion of its losses.
Japan Tips into a Technical Recession
Japan's fourth-quarter GDP figures fell short of expectations, contracting by 0.1% quarter-on-quarter, missing market estimates which had predicted a 0.3% growth. This decline follows a revised 0.8% drop in the previous quarter. On an annualized basis, Japan's GDP fell by 0.4%, extending the 3.3% decline seen in the third quarter. With two consecutive quarters of negative growth, Japan has officially entered a technical recession, marking the first instance in five years.
The country's economic woes stem from a combination of weak domestic demand and a sluggish global economy. High inflation has led Japanese consumers to curtail spending, while reduced demand and a slowdown in China, Japan's largest export market, have further exacerbated the situation.
Adding to Japan's economic concerns, recent reports indicate that Germany has surpassed Japan to become the world's third-largest economy. This development not only signifies a loss of prestige but also highlights underlying structural issues within the Japanese economy, including an ageing workforce that has dampened productivity.
          Bank of Japan's Policy Outlook
All eyes remain on the Bank of Japan (BoJ), which has hinted at the possibility of ending its negative interest rate policy later this year, potentially as early as April. Despite the weak GDP report, analysts believe this setback may delay but not completely derail the BoJ's plan to tighten monetary policy.
          Technical Analysis
Japan Slips to Fourth in Global Economy Ranking as Yen Bucks Downward Trend_1
The USD/JPY pair started the day on a positive note, with clear upward momentum. Despite facing downward pressure that threatened to break the intraday bullish trend line, the pair found support at the EMA50, facilitating a bullish rebound. This suggests a potential resumption of the expected bullish trend in the intraday and short-term timeframe, with anticipated targets at 151.70 and 152.25.
Maintaining a level above 149.80 is crucial to sustain the upward trajectory, as a breach could trigger additional declines, testing support around 148.45 before any renewed attempt at an upward movement.
Today's expected trading range is between support at 149.60 and resistance at 151.10, with an overall bullish trend anticipated for the day.
          TRADE RECOMMENDATION
          BUY USDJPY
          ENTRY PRICE : 150.26
          STOP LOSS : 149.00
          TAKE PROFIT : 152.25
