Earlier on Thursday, US Central Command confirmed that it had launched a new strike against Iran, targeting a military site in the strategic port city of Bandar Abbas. US President Donald Trump stated that he would not rush into a deal with Iran, whilst reiterating that the Strait of Hormuz would remain “open to all” and that the US would “defend it”. On Wednesday, Trump stated that the US would not ease sanctions on Iran nor unfreeze Iranian assets. Furthermore, the US Treasury Department announced that it had imposed sanctions on the Persian Gulf Straits Authority, the body established by Iran to manage the Strait of Hormuz.
The US’s recent escalation and Trump’s remarks could prompt Iran to launch a large-scale retaliation, thereby undermining the fragile ceasefire agreement. Consequently, traders continue to seek the US dollar as a safe haven, placing heavy pressure on gold prices, which are sensitive to dollar movements. Traders estimate the probability of the Federal Reserve raising interest rates by 25 basis points before the end of this year at close to 50 per cent, and consider the likelihood of a rate hike in January 2027 to be 60 per cent. Traders will also be monitoring the Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation gauge – the core Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index – for fresh clues regarding the central bank’s future interest rate trajectory.
Technical Analysis
On the four-hour chart, the Bollinger Bands are widening downwards and the moving averages are diverging downwards, indicating that the downtrend is not yet over. The RSI stands at 28, indicating that market sentiment is predominantly bearish. On the daily chart, the price has fallen to the vicinity of the EMA200 and MA200, where it is likely to find support and potentially rebound towards 4,500 and 4,600. The RSI stands at 34, reflecting strong pessimism in the market. The recommended strategy is to buy on dips.
