3 hours ago BrokersView

An online investment scam case involving more than $50 million in criminal proceeds has resulted in a 56-year-old Sydney man being sentenced to 14 years in prison by the NSW District Court on 17 September 2026. He will serve a nine-year non-parole period.

The Israeli national was convicted of dealing with money or property reasonably suspected to be proceeds of crime under section 400.2B(3) of the Criminal Code (Cth).

Shell Companies Used to Move Funds

Between June and November 2023, the man used a network of shell companies to conceal and transfer funds generated through fraudulent online investment schemes.

The scams targeted more than 1,000 victims across Australia and overseas, with reported losses exceeding $50 million. The case is described as one of the first significant prosecutions under Australia's proceeds of general crime money laundering provisions introduced through the 2021 Economic Disruption Act reforms.

AFP-Led Investigation

The AFP-led Joint Policing Cybercrime Coordination Centre worked with domestic and international law enforcement agencies, financial institutions, payment service providers and cryptocurrency businesses to trace the funds through complex financial networks.

AFP Detective Superintendent Marie Andersson said the case demonstrated the scale of criminal activity linked to investment scams and the financial and emotional harm suffered by victims.

For investors, the case highlights the need to verify online investment platforms and remain cautious of false promises of increased returns. Follow BrokersView for further investment fraud and regulatory updates.
