Singapore police have issued a warning over a growing investment scam involving fake online learning communities, after at least 48 victims lost a combined $3.6 million since May 2026.
According to authorities, scammers use social media advertisements promoting free investment courses, trading education programmes, or mentorship opportunities to attract potential victims. Interested individuals are then directed into WhatsApp chat groups where fraudsters pose as investment mentors, analysts, or successful traders.
Within these groups, scammers share purported market insights, investment recommendations, and screenshots showing substantial trading profits. Other group members, who are often accomplices, post testimonials and account balances to create the impression of a legitimate investment community.
Victims are subsequently instructed to open accounts on fraudulent investment platforms through websites or mobile applications, some of which are available on official app stores. They are then persuaded to transfer funds to designated bank accounts to begin trading.
In several cases, victims were instructed to hand over cash or gold to individuals claiming to represent the investment company. The couriers issued invoices or receipts to reinforce the legitimacy of the scheme.
Police said scammers sometimes allow victims to receive small initial returns before encouraging larger investments. The fraud is typically uncovered only when victims attempt to withdraw their funds and discover the trading profits displayed on the platform were fabricated.
The latest cases highlight the continued use of investment education and trading mentorship narratives to facilitate financial fraud. Rather than promoting specific investment products, scammers first build credibility through educational content before directing victims toward fraudulent trading platforms.
Authorities advised investors to verify investment firms and representatives through official regulatory databases, conduct independent due diligence, and remain cautious of investment groups that promise exclusive trading opportunities, guaranteed returns, or unusually high profits.
