Renowned Finance Academic Aswath Damodaran Warns Investors Against Scams

On July 17, Aswath Damodaran, a globally renowned valuation expert and Professor of Finance at New York University, warned investors to beware of investment scams via the social media platform X.

 

Damodaran clarified that he does not promote stocks to investors and has no relationship with investment entities.

 

Responding to incidents of impersonation and misinformation online, Damodaran emphasized that his primary identity is that of an educator, saying, “I am a teacher, first and foremost. ”

He stated that such claims are scams as he does not have an Instagram account or post on Facebook. He urges anyone who encounters this misinformation to report it as a scam.

 

This month, the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) of South Africa also issued a warning against an impersonation scam. The regulator found that scammers on social media platforms were posing as online trading provider Scope Markets and its CEO, Robert J. Van Eyden, to offer investment services to people.
