FTC: Older Americans Lose Over $1 Billion to Investment Scams in 2025

1 hour ago By Bob

The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reported that Americans aged 60 and older lost over $1 billion to investment scams in 2025, a 42% increase year-on-year. Its October 19, 2026 report highlights growing financial risks for older investors, while official data from Canada and Australia reveal similar concerns.

US Elder Fraud Losses Reach $3 Billion

According to the FTC's Protecting Older Consumers 2025–2026 report, total reported fraud losses among older Americans surged from approximately $600 million in 2020 to $3 billion in 2025.

Investment scams accounted for over $1 billion, with social media frequently used to approach victims.

The FTC estimates that actual fraud costs among older adults could range from $13.3 billion to $119.5 billion, reflecting substantial underreporting.

Canada and Australia Report Major Investment Scam Losses

Canada's Anti-Fraud Centre recorded C$351 million in investment scam losses in 2025, the country's largest reported fraud category by financial loss.

Canadian government figures also show that adults aged 60 and older lost C$111.3 million to investment fraud in 2024.

In Australia, the National Anti-Scam Centre reported A$837.7 million in investment scam losses in 2025 across combined reporting sources, making investment fraud the country's highest-loss scam category.

Investment Fraud Remains a Global Concern

Although reporting methods differ across countries, the findings highlight the financial damage caused by fraudulent investment schemes.

The FTC continues to pursue enforcement actions and consumer education initiatives targeting financial fraud.
