Exclusive Investment Tips? Social Media Ads Lure Victims into WhatsApp Scam Groups, FSMA Alerts

Aug 05, 2025 BrokersView

The Belgian Financial Services and Markets Authority (FSMA) has issued a public warning about a surge in fraudulent investment advertisements circulating on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. These ads entice the public to join WhatsApp groups that falsely promise exclusive, high-return investment tips.

The scams often impersonate trusted financial institutions, news outlets, or celebrities, a tactic known as cloned firm fraud. Victims may be asked to fill out forms detailing their financial background before gaining access to the group.

While access to these WhatsApp groups appears free, the scammers’ ultimate goal is to defraud victims of their money, either by pushing worthless shares or harvesting personal data for identity fraud and further scams.

FSMA Lists Common Red Flags to Know:

  • Unrealistic promises of high returns with no risk
  • Fake IPO investments or “guaranteed” stock value increases
  • Time-limited offers targeting exclusive groups
  • Pressure tactics like “If you leave now, you will miss out on this unique opportunity forever.”
  • Communication via unofficial channels like WhatsApp or Telegram, or private messages

How to Stay Safe from such Fraud:

  • Always verify the provider’s authorization status
  • Don’t trust blindly in logos or names—check the official website
  • Report suspicious ads and profiles to platforms like Meta
  • Avoid responding to investment invitations via unofficial channels and sharing personal data

This latest warning follows FSMA’s July alert, which identified dozens of newly emerged fraudulent online trading platforms.

BrokersView cautions victims against ‘recovery room’ fraud, where fraudsters pose as law firms or regulatory agencies offering to retrieve lost funds—for a fee—only to scam them again.

If you suspect a website is fraudulent or have fallen victim to a financial scam, you can Submit a Complaint to BrokersView.
