The regulator also outlined the tactics fraudsters use to ensnare victims, including:

  • Fake celebrity-endorsed advertisements
  • Deceptive recruitment websites
  • Fake profiles on social media or dating apps
  • Accidental SMS/WhatsApp messages
  • Investment invitations from seeming acquaintances promising high returns

How the Scams Unfold

Victims are typically structured to start with small deposits (e.g., €250) on platforms. In some cases, scammers remotely access victims’ devices under the guise of “assisting with transfers,” often installing malicious software.

Once funds are deposited, scammers manipulate dashboard data to reflect false profits, pressuring victims to invest more through repeated phone calls, time-limited offers, or threats. While victims may be allowed to withdraw small sums early on, larger withdrawal requests are blocked using fee excuses such as high costs and taxes.

FSMA noted that certain platforms operate on pyramid-style structures, encouraging users to recruit other participants to gain payouts. Once recruitment stalls, the entire scheme collapses.

FSMA emphasized that in all these scam cases, the platforms ultimately vanish, taking investor funds with them.
