AI-Generated Videos Spread via WhatsApp and Social Media Mislead Investors Into Following Australian Financial Analyst’s Stock Recommendations

Jan 22, 2026 BrokersView

Criminals are using social media to impersonate prominent Australians and global figures to promote fake investments. Recently, scammers used the image of nabtrade analyst Tom Piotrowski to falsely suggest endorsement of shares, despite his disclaimers that he does not give personal advice.

Other victims of impersonation include Robert Irwin, Elon Musk and Kylie Jenner. Scammers rely on ads and messaging apps like WhatsApp to pressure people into acting quickly.

Pump-and-Dump Tactics Amplified by Digital Hype

Investigations reveal that many scams rely on artificially inflating stock prices through coordinated social media hype, paid advertisements, and private messaging channels. Victims are pressured by urgent messages to invest before opportunities “disappear.” According to NAB’s data, around 70% of recent investment losses were traced back to social media or website-originated scams.

Chris Sheehan, NAB Executive for Group Investigations, notes that urgency is the common thread: “Once the price rises, the criminals quickly sell, leaving everyday investors with the losses.” The campaigns exploit the algorithms of digital platforms, which amplify content based on users’ search and engagement patterns, making them highly targeted and difficult to detect early.

AI and Deepfake Tools on the Rise

These scams are evolving beyond static images. Fraudsters are employing AI-generated videos and deepfakes to simulate authoritative endorsements, a trend reflected globally in cryptocurrency scams. Such tactics magnify the perceived credibility of fraudulent investment platforms, convincing victims to commit substantial funds.
