Cybersecurity researchers have warned that fraudsters are using fake Google advertisements to promote fraudulent cryptocurrency investment platforms, with recent Uniswap-themed phishing campaigns linked to more than $400,000 in stolen digital assets.
The scam targets users searching for cryptocurrency trading or DeFi platforms through Google Search. Attackers purchase sponsored advertisements or hijack advertiser accounts to place fake investment links above legitimate search results, increasing the likelihood of victims clicking malicious websites.
Researchers said the fraudulent ads imitate official Uniswap pages using cloned websites, deceptive URLs and hidden scripts designed to bypass Google’s automated security checks. Victims are redirected to counterfeit trading platforms where wallet connections and transaction approvals are secretly routed through attacker-controlled systems.
Blockchain investigators traced at least 146 ETH connected to the scam, valued at roughly $306,000, though analysts believe total losses likely exceed $400,000 due to additional unidentified wallets.
Security experts said the case reflects a broader trend of scammers abusing mainstream advertising platforms to distribute fake investment services, cryptocurrency trading portals and phishing applications.
Researchers warned that similar campaigns have also appeared through fake AI software promotions and fraudulent financial advertisements targeting crypto investors.
Cybersecurity firms advised users to avoid accessing trading platforms through sponsored ads, carefully verify URLs before connecting wallets, and rely on bookmarked official websites when using cryptocurrency exchanges or investment platforms.
