BANGKOK — Yesterday(August 20, 2026), Thai and Taiwanese police forces launched a joint operation targeting a transnational call-center scam network allegedly run by a Taiwanese mafia group, arresting more than 20 Taiwanese suspects in Cambodia.
The operation was led by Thailand's Anti-Online Scam Center (ACSC) under the direction of Police General Thana Chuwong, deputy national police chief, alongside the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) and Taiwan's Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB Taiwan).
The investigation began after CIB Taiwan uncovered a Taiwanese-run call-center network operating from Cambodia. Gang members posed as police officers to deceive victims over the phone. At least 46 victims have been identified so far, with total losses exceeding 200 million New Taiwan dollars (approximately $6.3 million USD).
The group lured victims through online job advertisements offering high-paying Chinese-language typing positions with free accommodation and meals. More than 100 Taiwanese nationals were tricked into traveling to Cambodia to work as call-center operators.
The scam network allegedly collaborated with Thai travel companies to disguise members' travel arrangements and avoid detection. The scheme involved:
Fake travel documents, return flight tickets, and hotel reservations
Thai credit cards used to pay for airline tickets
Making gang members' movements appear as legitimate tourism
Who Was Arrested
Among those arrested were: Financial backers of the operation; Operational leaders; A Taiwanese travel company owner who arranged travel for gang members.
Assets Seized
Authorities confiscated significant evidence including: Cash; Digital assets and cryptocurrency; Bank accounts and ATM cards; Electronic devices; Vehicles.
All seized assets will be used as evidence in legal proceedings on charges of public fraud and money laundering.
Thai police have stated they will continue investigating and expanding the case against anyone in Thailand who was involved in the criminal network.
This investigation highlights the growing trend of transnational scam operations using Southeast Asia as a base to target victims across borders. Stay vigilant, and always question unsolicited job offers promising easy money.
