Philippine Police Flag Rise in Crypto-Linked Online Investment Losses as 311 Cases Reported in 2025

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has renewed its warning to the public as cryptocurrency and online investment scams continue to rise, affecting an increasing number of Filipinos.

Figures from the PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group show that 311 investment-related scam cases were recorded nationwide between January 1 and December 31, 2025. Of these, 12 cases were directly linked to cryptocurrency schemes, reflecting the growing use of digital assets in fraudulent operations.

According to authorities, these scams typically entice victims with promises of unusually high or “guaranteed” returns. In some cases, victims are encouraged to recruit additional participants, creating structures similar to pyramid or referral-based schemes. To build credibility, scammers may initially allow small withdrawals, giving the impression that the platform is legitimate.

However, once larger sums are invested, access to accounts and supposed earnings is often restricted or completely blocked. Victims ultimately lose their funds, with little chance of recovery.

PNP Chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. urged the public to remain cautious when dealing with online investment platforms, stressing that financial fraud often exploits trust and a lack of verification. He noted that online scams pose risks beyond financial losses, as personal data and digital security may also be compromised.

Through its Anti-Cybercrime Group, the PNP said it continues to strengthen public awareness efforts and provide guidance aimed at helping citizens navigate online financial activities more safely, as investment-related scams remain a persistent threat.
