Netflix's Indian Desi Bling Star Hit by UAE Asset Freeze in AML Probe

Aug 04, 2026 BrokersView

The United Arab Emirates has ordered a temporary freeze on assets linked to Dubai-based businessman Satish Sanpal as authorities investigate suspected money laundering activities, according to local media reports.

The directive, issued by the UAE's Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), requires banks, financial institutions and virtual asset service providers (VASPs) to freeze bank accounts, investments, cryptocurrency wallets and safe deposit boxes associated with Sanpal, his wife Tabinda, and several related companies. The freeze also covers entities including ANAX Capital Asset Management Company, ANAX Capital Financial Markets LLC, ANAX Holding FZCO and SSB Bazaar General Trading LLC.

Financial institutions have been instructed to block withdrawals and transfers while continuing to accept deposits. They must also verify the legitimacy of transactions and the lawful source of funds connected to the affected accounts. Under UAE regulations, the temporary freeze is expected to remain in force for up to 30 days unless extended with approval from the Attorney General.

The inclusion of virtual asset service providers highlights the UAE's increasing scrutiny of digital assets as part of its anti-money laundering framework. VASPs, alongside banks, are required to comply with FIU directives and report suspicious activities.

Authorities have not disclosed the basis for the investigation, and no criminal charges have been filed against Sanpal. The businessman, who gained wider public attention after appearing with his wife on Netflix's Desi Bling, has previously denied allegations related to his business activities. Earlier this year, India's Delhi High Court noted that media reports had prematurely portrayed him as guilty while investigations were still ongoing.

The asset freeze is an investigative measure and does not constitute a finding of wrongdoing. Authorities have not indicated whether the restrictions will be extended beyond the initial 30-day period.
