Indian police are investigating an alleged investment fraud after a businessman lost ₹121,000 to a scheme promoted through an online gaming platform that promised unusually high investment returns.
According to a complaint filed with the Central CEN Police, the 36-year-old victim was contacted via WhatsApp by two individuals who allegedly introduced an investment opportunity through a platform called World777. The suspects reportedly claimed that deposits would be doubled and generate substantial profits, persuading the victim to participate.
Investigators said the victim was instructed to access the World777.now website and transfer funds to multiple bank accounts. Between April and June 2026, he allegedly made several transfers totalling ₹121,000 from his Kotak Mahindra Bank and Axis Bank accounts.
Police said the promised returns never materialised. After repeated attempts to recover his investment proved unsuccessful, the businessman reported the incident to authorities, alleging that the platform had been used to facilitate an investment fraud.
The case highlights another variation of online investment scams, where fraudsters combine gaming or betting-themed platforms with promises of guaranteed or unusually high returns to attract victims. Such schemes often rely on messaging applications and dedicated websites to solicit deposits before cutting off communication or refusing withdrawals.
A formal case has been registered, and investigators are working to identify the individuals behind the alleged fraud, trace the movement of the funds, and determine whether additional victims were targeted through the platform. Authorities have not disclosed whether the website remains operational as the investigation continues.
