FBI Agent Charged After Allegedly Stealing $925,000 in Crypto From Russian Investigation

A former FBI supervisory special agent has been charged after U.S. prosecutors alleged he stole nearly $925,000 in cryptocurrency from wallets linked to a Russian investigation and transferred the assets to his personal crypto accounts.

According to court filings, Patrick Yaroch allegedly made around a dozen unauthorized transfers between late 2024 and early 2025 by using wallet credentials obtained during an FBI investigation into cryptocurrency accounts associated with Russia.

Prosecutors said Yaroch later admitted to a Justice Department employee that he had become frustrated the FBI "could not or would not act against adversarial cryptocurrency accounts." He allegedly accessed internal FBI systems to obtain the information needed to move the funds.

Authorities said Yaroch voluntarily disclosed the misconduct after telling colleagues the incident was "eating him up inside." He also submitted an internal self-report and met with FBI officials before investigators searched his home and recovered information related to his cryptocurrency wallets.

Federal investigators valued the transferred assets at approximately $925,426, although prosecutors said the funds had become mixed with Yaroch's personal crypto holdings.

Yaroch has been charged with interstate transportation of stolen property and receipt of stolen property. A federal judge ordered him temporarily detained pending further court proceedings.

The FBI said it took immediate action after learning of the allegations, terminated Yaroch's employment, and launched an internal investigation.

The case highlights the growing compliance and governance challenges surrounding cryptocurrency investigations, particularly as law enforcement agencies continue expanding their capabilities to trace and seize digital assets linked to financial crime.
