ASIC Puts AI, Deepfakes and Scams at Centre of New Corporate Plan

4 hours ago BrokersView

Australia’s financial watchdog, ASIC, today released its Corporate Plan 2026–27 – vowing to crack down on AI‑driven fraud, deepfakes and misinformation while making life easier for law‑abiding businesses.

AI and market integrity top the agenda

The regulator will examine how banks use AI in customer services, how AI affects investors, and how deepfakes and misinformation could destabilise markets. ASIC also plans to upgrade its own data, intelligence and cyber capabilities to spot misconduct earlier.

Consumer protection priorities

ASIC will focus on scams, debt collection, insurance intermediaries in disaster zones, buy now pay later, and superannuation fee deductions – areas where harm spreads fast or has lasting impact.

Less burden for good businesses

The plan promises simpler guidance, faster licensing, better digital services and closer coordination with other regulators. “Strong regulation and economic growth are not opposing objectives,” said ASIC Chair Sarah Court.

Stronger enforcement for wrongdoers

While reducing friction for compliant firms, ASIC will intensify supervision of managed investment schemes and use its enforcement powers to hold violators accountable.

The Corporate Plan 2026–27 takes effect immediately, with enhanced surveillance and enforcement rolling out over the coming year.
