Singapore Police Warn of New Scam Variant Impersonating Telecommunications Company and MAS Staff

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) has urged the public again to remain vigilant against Government Officials Impersonation Scams. Since September 2025, at least 13 such cases have been reported, with reported losses of at least S$362,000.

 

In this latest iteration, fraudsters pose as representatives from the telecommunications company, M1 Limited, and the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS). Victims typically receive unsolicited calls, including WhatsApp voice calls, from individuals claiming to be M1 staff. These callers allege that the victims have active mobile subscriptions with pending payments or mobile phone deliveries.

 

When victims deny any such subscriptions, they are instructed to contact the supposed “customer service” via WhatsApp. This leads to a second scammer impersonating an MAS officer, who falsely claims that the victim’s personal details have been misused in criminal activities such as money laundering or fraud.

 

Victims are then coerced into performing “investigative” monetary transactions. These include transferring funds via PayNow or to “safety accounts”, handing over cash to unknown individuals, or performing cryptocurrency-related transfers. In some cases, victims were told to screen-share via WhatsApp while accessing bank accounts, a tactic that exposes sensitive financial information.

 

These scams share a common pattern with various impersonation tactics. In August, the SPF flagged a variant involving fake officers from the Suspicious Transaction Reporting Office (STRO) under the Commercial Affairs Department. Earlier in May, a separate advisory warned of phishing scams involving impersonation of POSB representatives.
