Several Cryptocurrency Exchange Websites in Kazakhstan Seized

Financial authorities in Kazakhstan have locked down at least five online platforms that illegally exchange cryptocurrencies. Documents, computer equipment, and cryptocurrency wallets have been seized in searches in the northern part of the country.

The Financial Monitoring Agency (FMA) of the Republic of Kazakhstan has now dismantled a group involved in the illegal trading of cryptocurrencies. After investigation, its members mostly organized their transactions through several websites, including "kzobmen.com, 1wm.kz, kazobmen.ru, wm007.kz, and kz-exchange.com."

The search focused on six locations as part of an operation in the Kostanai region, in which items from the alleged platform operator were seized, the watchdog said in a press release. Several laptops, cell phones, and flash memory sticks of its employees were confiscated, as well as bank and accounting documents.

The authority said the organizers of the online exchange received "exceptionally large revenues" from its business activities, but did not specify the exact amount. Nor did it disclose exactly how many people were in the group or their specific identities.

What investigators determined was that they had two cryptocurrency wallets with a combined balance of $6,000 in digital assets on Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange. Access to these wallets has been temporarily restricted, the FMA said. Coins worth more than $200,000 were found in wallets on other exchanges.

According to the announcement, a pre-trial investigation is underway. The Financial Supervisory Authority also cautioned that these types of activities are allowed only under the special legal regime of the Astana International Financial Center (AIFC).

Kazakhstan's government has been taking steps to regulate the country's cryptocurrency market, which has been growing since the Central Asian country became a hotspot for bitcoin mining following China's crackdown on the industry in 2021.

To legally operate an exchange platform, crypto companies need to obtain regulatory permission and enter business registration in Kazakhstan's financial center.
