Romance & Investment Scam Warning: 'Perfect Lover' Defrauds at Least 30 Women Over a Decade

A single mother from London, UK, recounted her experience falling victim to a foreign exchange investment scam on the dating app Tinder. Fraudster Christopher Harkins allegedly deceived at least 30 women, with losses totaling nearly £70,000.

Victim Caitlyn revealed to the BBC that she matched with Harkins on Tinder in 2020. He presented himself as a successful businessman but was actually a con artist running a fake foreign exchange investment scheme.

Harkins invited her to join him on a holiday trip. When Caitlyn expressed that she couldn't afford the travel expenses, he offered to help, claiming he could double her savings.

Since the scammer had fabricated an identity as a 38-year-old successful entrepreneur, Caitlyn felt touched by his offer of assistance, seeing him as a wealthy man willing to help her make money.

Harkins assured her that she could give him whatever she had, promising that he would assist. Eventually, the victim handed over £3,132, which was precious to her.

However, when Caitlyn sought to withdraw the money, Harkins claimed the bank account had been frozen and demanded additional funds to unfreeze it.

The scammer relentlessly pressured her, even urging her to take out loans and overdrafts, leaving the victim terrified. Caitlyn recalled, "I was getting very nervous by now. I had given him all the money I had. He kept saying I could take out bank loans and overdrafts."

Growing suspicious, the victim texted Harkins demanding proof the investment was legitimate. Unexpectedly, his demeanor abruptly shifted, sending Caitlyn into panic. Harkins was angry, warning, "Don't speak to me like that, you're going to regret speaking to me like that."

As a single mother with two children and no job, Caitlyn's situation grew increasingly desperate. She began begging him to return even just £200-300. But the scammer ignored and eventually blocked her.

Harkins has now been sentenced to 12 years in prison for crimes against 10 women. He meticulously crafted a flawless online persona while secretly perpetrating scams, including investment fraud. Some victims were left with long-term debt or bankruptcy.

Harkins was arrested in early 2020 but subsequently fled to London using a false identity to continue his crimes. In 2021, he was jailed for defrauding another woman out of £16,700. Media investigations later uncovered other fraud cases linked to Harkins, totaling nearly £70,000. Over nearly a decade, at least 30 women reportedly fell victim to the scammer.
