Police Scotland has issued a public warning over a rise in sophisticated investment scams, urging consumers to carry out thorough checks before investing.
According to the police, fraudsters are increasingly using convincing online advertisements, social media campaigns and unsolicited calls to promote fake investment opportunities, often promising high returns with little or no risk. Recent reports from Scotland's North East indicate that victims have lost substantial sums to fraudulent cryptocurrency schemes, fake share offerings and cloned websites impersonating legitimate financial firms.
Authorities warned that scammers frequently create professional-looking websites, use fake branding and even display fabricated investment profits to encourage victims to commit more funds.
Police Scotland advised consumers to independently research investment firms, verify that firms and advisers are authorised by the UK's Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), and remain cautious of high-pressure sales tactics, unsolicited approaches and promises of guaranteed returns. The force also urged anyone who suspects they have been targeted by an investment scam to contact their bank immediately and report the incident to the police.
