Meta has taken down more than 5.4 million fraudulent and misleading posts on Facebook in Vietnam during the first half of 2025.
The company said it reviewed nearly 12 million accounts globally across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp linked to scam operations, with about 20% involving compromised accounts.
In Vietnam, Meta also deleted 14,000 Instagram posts, suspended 116,000 Facebook accounts and 28,000 Instagram accounts, with more than 94% of violations on Facebook and 76% on Instagram violations detected automatically. On Facebook Marketplace, more than 444,000 suspicious posts were blocked and 18 million ads removed. Vietnam ranked second in the number of posts removed in the listed markets, behind Thailand, which saw 7.3 million posts removed.
Khoi Le, Meta’s country director for Vietnam, said stricter controls are essential as online scams grow more sophisticated.
TikTok reported similar challenges, removing over 400,000 scam‑related videos in 2024, with 97% detected automatically, according to Nguyen Lam Thanh, CEO of TikTok Vietnam.
Meta has recently come under negative headlines again after Reuters reported that the company’s internal documents showed around 10% of its 2024 revenue (about US$16 billion) came from fraudulent ads and promotions for banned goods.
The Global Anti‑Scam Alliance (GASA) estimates that cybercrime losses exceeded US$1 trillion worldwide in 2023, including US$16 billion in Vietnam. The Vietnam Cybersecurity Association reported US$72 million in online fraud losses in 2024, while Pakistan was among the hardest‑hit developing nations, losing US$9.3 billion (2.5% of its GDP) to scams in 2025, according to GASA and Feedzai’s report.
