Hong Kong's Anti-Scam App 'Scameter+' Upgraded with Social Media Fraud Detection Feature

As fraudsters increasingly target potential victims through social media platforms, Hong Kong's anti-scam application "Scameter+" has been updated. Hong Kong police have expanded the app's functions to include detecting suspicious social media content.

The new functions streamline the process for citizens to flag fraudulent information across different platforms. Upon encountering suspected scams, users can upload relevant screenshots via the "Report" function and select the source platform. The artificial intelligence technology automatically analyzes risks in real-time, with police verification and risk rating conducted afterward.

The latest version of Scameter+ will automatically update its scam database without requiring manual updates after opening the app. Hong Kong's Cybercrime department will also compile the latest fraud trends, rank local scams, and push anti-fraud alerts to citizens to keep them informed of dynamic developments.

Deputy police commissioner for operations Keith Yip Wan-lung stated that from January to September 2025, Hong Kong police received 32,142 scam reports involving HK$5.64 billion in financial losses. Among these, investment fraud cases continue to rise.

During this period, Hong Kong police arrested 4,552 fraud suspects, froze 27.6% of illicit proceeds, and seized HK$157 million. One case involved a staggering HK$145 million, where scammers allegedly used deepfake technology to impersonate a victims' acquaintance and lure into the individual into transferring virtual assets.
