DFSA Impersonation Scam Uses AI Images and Fake Compliance Officers

3 hours ago By Mark

The Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA) has warned about an impersonation scam in which fraudsters falsely claim to hold packages containing money and gold bars for recipients.

Fake DFSA Officers Demand 11.1% Fee

According to the DFSA, scammers pose as officers from a fictitious Compliance Department and demand a fee equal to 11.1% of the package’s alleged value. They describe the payment as a charge for the package to “leave the country” and pressure recipients to pay before a deadline.

The scammers also use AI-generated images showing packages marked with recipients’ names and addresses, alongside the DFSA logo and office imagery, to make the claims appear legitimate.

Other Regulators Face Impersonation Scams

Similar tactics have been reported in Europe. In 2026, the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) warned that fraudsters misuse its name and logo, use counterfeit documents and pose as ESMA officials to request personal information or administrative fees, including in alleged fund-recovery schemes.

The Financial Times also reported in August that fraudsters had posed as French AMF staff and instructed customers of unauthorised crypto platforms to transfer assets to fraudulent websites. The cases emerged amid changes linked to the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA).

Investor Protection Measures

The DFSA states that it does not hold boxes containing money or gold bars, charge a “leaving the country” fee, or use email addresses ending in @dfsaofficals.com. Investors should independently verify suspicious communications through official websites and avoid sending money or sharing banking credentials.

Anyone who has already made a payment should contact their bank and relevant police authority immediately, preserve all related records and report suspected correspondence through the relevant regulator’s official complaint channel.
