A South Korean court has sentenced the CEO of cryptocurrency lending platform Delio to 15 years in prison for defrauding more than 1,100 customers of approximately KRW70 billion (around $50 million) in digital assets.
The Seoul Southern District Court found Delio CEO Mr. Jeong guilty of obtaining virtual assets through fraudulent means while operating the platform. Prosecutors had sought a 20-year prison sentence.
Delio accepted Bitcoin and Ether deposits from customers and promised high yields. However, on June 14, 2023, the platform abruptly restricted customers’ access to their funds. The company subsequently filed for bankruptcy in November 2024.
According to the court, Jeong falsely obtained a virtual asset trading licence and used the platform to collect approximately KRW70 billion worth of digital assets from customers. The case initially involved allegations affecting around 2,800 victims, but the court excluded significant evidence due to procedural issues, resulting in a smaller number of victims being reflected in the final ruling.
Delio’s collapse left customers unable to access their cryptocurrency holdings and triggered wider concerns over the risks surrounding high-yield crypto lending platforms and the protection of customer assets.
The defense is expected to appeal the ruling.
The case adds to a series of major cryptocurrency-related fraud cases in South Korea. Authorities have continued to intensify scrutiny of digital asset businesses following several high-profile collapses and investor losses, increasing pressure on crypto platforms to strengthen asset protection and regulatory compliance.
