The Italian financial regulator, Consob, has ordered the blocking of seven websites as part of its ongoing crackdown on unauthorised financial activities conducted online.
According to a statement released by the Authority, six of the websites were offering investment services without the required authorisation, while one website was involved in the public offering of financial products without an approved prospectus. The measures aim to protect investors and combat abusive financial intermediation.
Consob exercised its powers under the “Growth Decree” (Law No. 58 of 28 June 2019, Article 36, paragraph 2-terdecies) to block the websites of unauthorised financial intermediaries, as well as the authority granted by Law No. 8 of 28 February 2020 (Article 4, paragraph 3-bis) to halt abusive public offerings.
With this latest action, the total number of websites blocked by Consob since July 2019 has risen to 1,562. The implementation of the blackout is being carried out by internet service providers operating in Italy and may take several days to become fully effective due to technical reasons.
Consob reiterated the importance of investor vigilance, urging the public to verify that any operator offering investment or crypto-asset services is properly authorised. Investors are also advised to ensure that financial or crypto-asset offerings are accompanied by an officially approved prospectus or white paper.
BrokersView reminds the increasing sophistication of online fraud, highlighting the growing use of cloned websites, deceptive emails, fake profiles impersonating public figures or celebrities, and content generated using artificial intelligence—such as images, voices, or videos—designed to mislead investors into making harmful financial decisions.
To help investors identify and avoid fraudulent schemes, Consob encourages consultation of the “Occhio alle truffe!” (Watch Out for Scams) section available on its official website.
