According to the police, fraudsters are targeting Massachusetts seniors with various scams, attempting to steal savings through emerging cryptocurrency scams or old-style tactics.

The rise of digital currency fraud has caused significant financial losses for Boston residents. In 2024, locals lost at least $9 million to cryptocurrency scams. Police anticipate that scams in 2025 will become more sophisticated, widespread, and result in even greater losses.

Boston police advise seniors to be cautious of investment scams, particularly those pressuring them to purchase cryptocurrency at Bitcoin ATMs.

Scammers offer so-called “low-risk, high-return” investment opportunities through social media platforms or dating apps, sometimes directly calling victims. They pressure victims to stay on the line, continuously forcing them to buy cryptocurrency or transfer funds to digital wallets controlled by them.

To combat investment scams, police advise seniors to conduct thorough research before investing in digital currencies. They should be wary of social media ads and unsolicited investment offers, exercise caution with new online acquaintances, and never disclose digital wallet keys.

Additionally, criminals may lure seniors into becoming “money mules” to facilitate fund transfers for investment scams and other criminal activities.
