NZ FMA Expands Warning on Investment Scam TXEX: Pyramid Scheme Tied to Remote Access, More Websites Flagged
The Financial Markets Authority (FMA) of New Zealand has issued an updated warning against TXEX, a WhatsApp-based educational and investment scam, following continued complaints and the discovery of new associated entities and duplicate websites.
Initially identified in April, TXEX continues to operate under various domain variations and aliases. The scam lures victims via WhatsApp, Telegram, Viber, and other messaging platforms, inviting them into group chats led by self-styled “mentor, “coach”, “professor”, “assistant,” or “crypto adviser.”
Once inside, victims are urged to recruit friends and family and transfer funds to fraudulent platforms. The FMA notes the scheme bears the hallmarks of a pyramid structure, with rewards such as dinner reimbursements offered for successful referrals.
Alarmingly, the scam has been linked to remote access attacks, allowing perpetrators to control victims’ devices, access cameras, install apps, and steal personal and banking data.
Some platforms allow small withdrawals to build trust, an approach commonly used in Ponzi schemes, before encouraging larger investments and further recruitment. Others impersonate banks, investment firms, and other financial service providers to create a false appearance of legitimacy.
These scammers block withdrawals by demanding a substantial release fee. However, even after the fee is paid, no funds are returned.
The FMA urges extreme caution and reminds the public to verify any financial service provider’s authorization before engaging.
