FMA Issues Alert on Increasing Fake Investment Websites Targeting New Zealanders

Nov 26, 2025 BrokersView

New Zealand investors are facing increasing threats from fraudulent online investment platforms. Scammers create websites promising fast profits and sophisticated trading tools, only to take investors’ money and disappear. These schemes are constantly evolving, but often follow a predictable pattern.

Scammers typically approach victims through social media advertisements, group chats, and unsolicited messages. Promises of exclusive opportunities or celebrity endorsements are commonly used to gain trust. Victims are then directed to a fake online trading platform where they are encouraged to make an initial investment.

Small initial deposits are often requested first. In some cases, scammers allow victims to withdraw this first amount to create a false sense of security. Some schemes involve installing software on a victim’s device, supposedly to manage investments, but in reality it gives scammers remote access to sensitive information and bank accounts.

Once initial investments are made, scammers provide fabricated account statements showing rapid profits to persuade victims to invest larger sums. When victims try to withdraw funds, excuses such as “fees” or “taxes” are used to block access, and the money is taken. Over time, pressure to invest more intensifies, leaving victims with significant losses.

There are several warning signs of a fake platform. Unrealistic returns and promises of guaranteed profits are major red flags. Platforms that require unusual payment methods, such as cryptocurrency, or that have limited or inconsistent contact information, should also be treated with extreme caution.

Several fraudulent platforms have recently been identified, including Access Point Investment (accesspointinv.com), Acuity Ltd (acuitylimited.com), and AgroUltraTrading (agroultratrading.com) as of November 2025. The prevalence of these scams highlights the ongoing risk for investors and underscores the importance of remaining vigilant when approached with online investment opportunities.
