European Authorities Busts Transnational Cryptocurrency Fraud Network, Seizing Assets Worth at Least €1.615 Million

On November 4, the Paris Prosecutor's Office announced via LinkedIn that French, Belgian, and Cypriot authorities jointly executed an operation against an international criminal network involved in cryptocurrency investment scam. The group allegedly laundered illicit proceeds totaling $700 million through blockchain and other channels.

According to the Office's statement, from October 27 to 30, police forces from France, Belgium, and Cyprus, along with Eurojust, conducted an action. Nine suspects were apprehended at residences in Cyprus, Spain, and Germany.

The raids also seized cryptocurrency worth €415,000, €300,000 in cash, €800,000 in bank accounts, and luxury watches valued at over €100,000. In addition, authorities seized several properties, the value of which is still being determined.

The investigation into this case began in 2023 when European authorities received numerous complaints from victims of cryptocurrency fraud.

It is reported that criminals operated dozens of fraudulent cryptocurrency investment platforms, luring victims with promises of highly attractive returns. Hundreds of European investors transferred cryptocurrency to these platforms but lost access to their funds.

Investigations revealed that the illicitly obtained cryptocurrency was laundered through blockchain and other methods, with the total amount involved reaching $700 million.

Victims encountered these platforms through different channels, including sponsored social media ads, phone calls, fake news, and promotional content falsely featuring endorsements from celebrities or purported successful investors.

Investment fraud groups often use phone calls and emails to lure victims into fake online trading platforms. Therefore, investors should be wary of investment advice from unconventional channels.

Before trading, always carefully verify the financial license of the trading platform to avoid engaging with unregulated ones.
