Consob Orders Blocking of 5 Websites for Unauthorised Investment Services

The Italian financial regulator, Consob, has ordered the blocking of five websites that were unlawfully providing investment services and activities relating to financial instruments without the required authorisation.

The action forms part of Consob's ongoing efforts to combat financial fraud and abusive financial intermediation. The Authority exercised its powers under the "Growth Decree" to block websites operated by unauthorised financial intermediaries.

With the latest measures, the total number of websites blocked by Consob since July 2019 has risen to 1,723, including 204 websites linked to crypto-asset activities.

Consob reminded investors to exercise caution when making investment decisions by verifying that operators offering investment or crypto-asset services are properly authorised. The regulator also advised investors to ensure that financial and crypto-asset offerings are accompanied by an approved prospectus or white paper where required.

The Authority further warned about the increasing sophistication of online financial fraud, highlighting the growing use of cloned websites, deceptive emails, fake profiles impersonating politicians and celebrities, and artificial intelligence-generated content such as images, voices, and videos designed to mislead investors.

To help investors identify and avoid fraudulent schemes, Consob encourages the public to consult its "Watch for scams!" section, which provides guidance and information on recognising abusive financial initiatives.
