The Belgian Financial Services and Markets Authority (Belgian FSMA) has been receiving consumer complaints about new fraudulent trading platforms in the past few weeks, according to information on the regulator's website.
The FSMA said these trading platforms attract the attention of consumers by placing ads on social media or online video platforms. In these fake ads, someone, sometimes a celebrity, will explain how to get rich quick. Some platforms also use mobile applications to lure victims.
The regulator said these fake ads and software often offer virtual currency, trading software or training courses. After clicking on an ad or downloading an app, scammers will quickly contact the victim with specific investment advice. Other platforms will contact consumers through dating social media software or fake social media accounts. In addition, there are many trading platforms using WhatsApp and Telegram.
FSMA noted that some fraudulent trading platforms also offer consumers so-called "affiliate programme" in what is suspected to be a Ponzi scheme.
Moreover, these frauds are so aggressive that scammers may even claim to be authorized by financial regulators. Other scammers try to convince victims to allow them to remotely control their computers in order to transfer money.
Scammers will also offer victims higher and higher amounts of money to invest and promise refund in exchange for transferring money.
The regulator said that victims who agreed to transfer money to the scammers complained that they could not receive their money back or were unable to learn about their investments on the platforms.
As a result, the Authority investigated and published the names and Web sites of these fraudulent trading platforms and strongly advised consumers not to give any response to the financial services on these platforms.
