  • Modern proprietary platform featuring native TradingView integration, enabling professional-grade charting and technical analysis within a seamless browser interface.

Cons
  • Mandatory inactivity fee of £10 per month after 12 months of no trading, which can diminish the cash balance of long-term or infrequent account holders.

  • Absence of MetaTrader 5 (MT5) platform support, limiting the options for users who require the latest industry-standard software for advanced automated trading.
City Index Review Overview

In this City Index review, we examine the provider's regulatory status, trading costs, and platform features to help you make an informed decision. Our objective analysis directly answers the core question: is City Index a good broker for your specific trading needs?

Is City Index Legit and Safe?

City Index is a highly secure, multi-regulated broker that provides strong client fund protections and is backed by a financially stable, Nasdaq-listed parent company [1].

City Index review

What Is City Index? Company Background

Established in London in September 1983, City Index is one of the oldest and most recognizable retail trading brands in the United Kingdom. Over its four-decade history, the broker pioneered financial spread betting and later expanded into contracts for difference (CFDs) and forex trading. Today, the brand is owned and operated by StoneX Group Inc. (NASDAQ: SNEX), a major publicly traded financial services conglomerate with a history dating back over a century [1]. The backing of a publicly listed parent company is a key consideration in any city index review, as StoneX is subject to stringent financial reporting, regular external audits, and robust corporate governance requirements that private brokerages are not required to meet [1].

City Index Regulation

City Index is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), and the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC) [1]. These prominent oversight bodies are widely classified as tier-1 and tier-2 regulatory agencies with extremely strict operational standards [1]. You can check the database of the FCA official register to verify City Index's license. To do this independently, search for City Index's regulated operating entity, StoneX Financial Ltd, using reference number 446717.

Which City Index Entity Serves Your Region?

The table below outlines the primary operating entities used by City Index, highlighting the regulatory frameworks and protections available based on geographic regions.

Entity NameRegulatorLicense NumberRegulatory TierInvestor Protection
StoneX Financial LtdFinancial Conduct Authority (FCA)446717Tier 1FSCS up to £85,000, Segregated Client Funds, Negative Balance Protection
StoneX Financial Pty LtdAustralian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC)345646Tier 1Segregated Client Funds, Local AFSL Oversight
StoneX Financial Pte. Ltd.Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS)CMS101170Tier 1Segregated Client Trust Accounts, Local MAS Compliance
StoneX Europe LtdCyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC)400/21Tier 2ICF up to €20,000, Segregated Client Funds, Negative Balance Protection
GAIN Global Markets, Inc.Cayman Islands Monetary Authority (CIMA)25033Tier 3Segregated Client Funds, Higher Leverage Limits

Ultimately, clients registered under the FCA and CySEC entities enjoy the highest level of investor protection, while international traders under the CIMA entity trade with higher leverage but with fewer regulatory safety nets.

For retail clients exploring city index singapore, you will be onboarded under StoneX Financial Pte. Ltd., which holds a Capital Markets Services License. This ensures that Singaporean clients trade under a regime that prioritizes fair trading practices, asset segregation, and strict local compliance.

When searching for information regarding city index canada, traders should note that City Index does not directly offer retail trading accounts to Canadian residents. Although its parent company StoneX is registered under the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (CIRO), local regulatory limitations prevent the "City Index" brand from serving Canadian CFD traders directly, and interested retail parties are usually redirected to alternative CIRO-compliant brands like FOREX.com.

Restricted Countries

City Index does not accept clients from several jurisdictions due to strict local regulations and compliance limitations.

  • Restricted jurisdictions: United States, Canada, France, Japan, Belgium, New Zealand, and Iraq.
  • Regulatory limitations block access in specific regions because of local retail CFD prohibitions, such as the outright CFTC ban on retail CFD trading in the United States.

Client Fund Protection

Retail safety at City Index goes beyond basic regulatory oversight and includes a suite of structural financial safeguards:

  • Segregated client accounts protect customer assets by ensuring all client capital is held in tier-1 banks completely separate from corporate operating funds [1].
  • Negative balance protection is legally guaranteed for retail clients under FCA and CySEC oversight, ensuring you can never lose more than your initial deposit.
  • The UK Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) offers a critical fallback of up to £85,000 in the unlikely event of broker insolvency [1].
  • The Cyprus Investor Compensation Fund (ICF) protects EU-based retail clients up to €20,000 if the broker fails to meet its financial obligations.

City Index User Reviews and Trustpilot Rating

City Index holds a Trustpilot rating of 4.3/5 based on approximately 390 reviews, reflecting generally positive user sentiment with some localized criticisms. Traders can See City Index reviews on Trustpilot to evaluate real-time client feedback, which was last checked and verified as of June 2026.

The positive feedback for the broker centers on the quality of its retail ecosystem:

  • Attentive customer service is frequently highlighted, with clients praising specific account managers for providing prompt, personalized assistance during setup and troubleshooting.
  • The highly customizable charting interface is widely appreciated, particularly the integration with TradingView and the overall usability of the proprietary mobile app.
  • Fast execution and smooth trade processing are noted by active day traders who rely on the platform's stability during major session openings.

Conversely, recurring user complaints typically focus on operational policy friction rather than systematic platform failures:

  • Inactivity fees remain a primary source of user complaints, with multiple traders expressing frustration over the £10 (or regional equivalent) monthly fee deducted after 12 consecutive months of account dormancy.
  • Onboarding delays are occasionally flagged, with some new clients reporting that the document verification and compliance process took longer than expected.
  • Temporary login latency has been reported by a small number of users during periods of high-impact macroeconomic news releases.

City Index Account Types

City Index provides a simplified, commission-free retail account structure that requires low entry barriers, but it lacks raw-spread accounts for retail clients and does not accommodate Sharia-compliant traders.

City Index Account Types and Minimum Deposit Requirements

To accommodate different execution preferences and platforms, City Index offers retail traders a choice between its Standard CFD account and its MT4 account, alongside an Elective Professional option for high-volume traders.

  • Standard CFD Account: This is the broker's primary retail offering, which grants access to its full suite of over 13,500 markets. It employs a spread-only pricing model for forex, indices, and commodities, with average EUR/USD spreads starting around 0.8 pips and zero commissions charged. Stock CFD trades are subject to a standard commission fee, such as 0.08% for UK and European equities (with a £10 minimum) and 1.8 cents per share for US stocks (with a $10 minimum). This account connects directly to the proprietary Web Trader, mobile apps, and TradingView.
  • MT4 Account: This account is designed specifically for traders who prefer using the MetaTrader 4 desktop and mobile platforms. While it retains the commission-free, spread-only pricing model of the Standard account, its tradeable catalog is restricted to roughly 80+ currency pairs, select global stock indices, and commodities.
  • Professional Account: Retail traders who qualify under strict regulatory criteria—such as maintaining a financial portfolio exceeding €500,000, having relevant industry experience, or exhibiting significant trading frequency—can apply for an Elective Professional tier. This account unlocks a maximum city index leverage of up to 1:500 for forex trading (depending on geographic region). However, electing for professional status means waiving crucial retail safeguards, including negative balance protection and eligibility for investor compensation schemes.

In practice, the city index minimum deposit makes the broker highly accessible to newcomers. Officially, there is a $0 minimum deposit requirement in regions like the United Kingdom, meaning there is no high financial barrier preventing you from opening a live account. However, City Index advises a practical, recommended starting deposit of $100 / £100 to maintain sufficient margin. In contrast, local regulators in regions like Singapore and Australia mandate a specific, structural city index minimum deposit of $150 in local currency before trading can commence.

This low-entry threshold makes City Index a very approachable option for beginners. However, the commission-free spread trade-off means active day traders or scalpers may face higher overall transaction costs compared to brokers that charge a fixed commission alongside ultra-tight, raw-spread accounts. Beginners can bypass live-market risks initially by utilizing a city index demo account, which is loaded with $10,000 in virtual funds, though it carries a strict 12-week expiration limit.

Does City Index Offer an Islamic Account?

City Index does not offer swap-free or Islamic accounts across any of its operating jurisdictions, meaning that Muslim traders cannot access a Sharia-compliant trading environment. Because of this restriction, traders who cannot pay or receive overnight interest fees must look to alternative brokers that provide dedicated, swap-free trading options.

City Index Fees and Trading Costs

City Index's pricing sits in the mid-range of retail CFD brokers, offering competitive spread-only forex trading alongside standard equity commissions and moderate overnight swap fees.

City Index Trading Fees (Spreads / Commission Fees / Swap and Overnight Fees)

The broker uses a spread-only pricing model for its non-equity CFD markets, which consolidates the transaction cost into the buy and sell prices:

  • Spreads: Spreads at City Index are variable and fluctuate in response to real-time market volatility. For the EUR/USD pair, the minimum spread starts at 0.7 pips, with the historical average spread sitting between 0.8 and 1.1 pips. While these spreads are highly competitive during liquid trading hours, they can widen slightly during major macroeconomic news releases or off-market hours. Spreads on major global indices like the UK 100 or US 30 are also competitive, starting at 0.4 points and 1 point respectively.
  • Commissions: Retail clients pay no commission on forex, indices, or commodity CFD trades. However, share CFDs are subject to commission charges that vary based on the stock's exchange. Trading UK or European equities incurs a commission of 0.08% of the position value, with a £10 minimum charge per transaction. US equities are charged at 1.8 cents per share, subject to a $10 minimum commission.
  • Swap and Overnight Fees: Positions held open past the daily market close (typically 5:00 PM EST) incur an overnight financing fee or receive a credit, depending on the trade direction and the underlying currency yield. This swap fee is calculated using regional benchmark overnight interest rates (such as SOFR for US dollars) plus or minus a standard broker administration markup, which generally hovers around 2.5% to 3.0%. For example, holding a long position on a major forex pair or index typically incurs a daily fee, whereas a short position can sometimes yield a minor interest credit depending on the current interest rate environment.

City Index Non-Trading Fees (Inactivity Fees / Currency Conversion Fees)

Non-trading fees at City Index are generally aligned with standard industry practices, though they can impact casual investors who do not trade frequently:

  • Inactivity Fees: If there is no trading activity on your account for 12 consecutive months, City Index charges a recurring monthly inactivity fee of £10 (or regional currency equivalent, such as S$15 or $15). This fee will continue to be deducted on a monthly basis until you either execute a trade or your account balance reaches zero.
  • Currency Conversion Fees: When you trade a CFD asset denominated in a currency that differs from your account's base currency, the broker converts those profits, losses, or commissions at its standard commercial exchange rate. This conversion process includes a small conversion charge (typically a minor markup of 0.5%), which is applied automatically as the funds are settled in your base currency.

City Index Deposits & Withdrawals

City Index provides a fee-free deposit and withdrawal process supporting credit/debit cards and bank transfers, though it lacks modern e-wallets.

To fund a live account, you can use popular payment channels like Visa, MasterCard, Maestro, and Electron cards, as well as domestic or international bank wire transfers. It is worth noting that traditional e-wallets such as PayPal, Neteller, or Skrill are not supported by the broker, meaning clients must rely entirely on plastic or bank wires.

From the broker's side, there are no deposit fees or withdrawal fees charged for standard transactions. The only structural exception occurs if a client in the United Kingdom requests a same-day domestic wire withdrawal via CHAPS, which incurs a fee of £25. All standard bank wire withdrawals and card refunds remain completely free of charge.

The minimum deposit limit for each card transaction is set at 100 units of the account's base currency (such as £100, $100, or €100), whereas bank wire deposits carry no minimum limit at all. For withdrawals, the minimum limit is £50 (or regional equivalent, like S$150) per transaction, though you can withdraw less if you are clearing out your remaining account balance. The maximum online withdrawal limit is capped at £20,000 per transaction, and card payments are limited to a maximum refund of £20,000 per 24-hour period.

Processing speeds for deposits are virtually instantaneous for credit and debit cards, while bank wires can take 1 to 2 business days to clear into your trading balance. Withdrawal requests are processed internally by City Index's back office within 1 to 2 business days. Once approved, funds returned to a debit card typically take 1 to 2 business days to show in your account (though some card issuers can take up to 5 business days), while standard bank transfers take 1 to 3 business days depending on the routing.

Genuine customer feedback on public forums indicates very few withdrawal complaints or payment processing issues. In fact, many active traders express satisfaction with the seamless, zero-fee refund process. The only isolated withdrawal issues reported by users stem from delays associated with KYC (Know Your Customer) documentation reviews. When first-time users request a payout, regulatory anti-money laundering (AML) protocols require the broker to verify that the destination bank account or card belongs to the account holder. This compliance check can temporarily delay the initial withdrawal by 1 to 2 business days, but once verified, subsequent payouts are executed without any further delays.

City Index Trading Platforms, Conditions & Experience

City Index provides a versatile trading environment highlighted by its highly customized proprietary Web Trader, a feature-rich mobile app, and access to over 13,500 global markets.

Does City Index Support MT4, MT5 & Mobile Trading?

City Index fully supports the popular MetaTrader 4 platform alongside its award-winning mobile trading app, but MetaTrader 5 remains unavailable for the majority of retail clients.

  • Supported platforms: Web Trader, City Index Mobile App, MetaTrader 4 (MT4), and direct TradingView integration.

The trading experience varies depending on which software you choose to utilize:

  • Web Trader: Built on HTML5, the broker's flagship browser platform runs smoothly on all major operating systems. It supports advanced features such as single-click trading, fully customizable workspaces, sophisticated smart order tickets, and native TradingView integration containing over 80 technical indicators.
  • MetaTrader 4: For traders reliant on automated trading (Expert Advisors), City Index offers a dedicated MT4 setup. However, the MT4 platform has a restricted market range, only allowing users to trade forex, gold, silver, and select indices rather than the full 13,500+ instrument catalog.
  • MetaTrader 5: Retail clients should note that MT5 is not supported in the majority of operating jurisdictions, meaning traders who require this specific platform's coding language (MQL5) or deeper multi-asset functionality must look elsewhere.
  • Mobile Trading App: Available on iOS and Android devices, the proprietary City Index mobile app has consistently won industry awards, including "Best Trading App" at the Professional Trader Awards. It seamlessly syncs with your desktop Web Trader workspace and features full-screen TradingView charting, one-swipe execution, and live news streaming.

What Can You Trade on City Index?

City Index boasts an expansive catalog of over 13,500 CFD instruments spanning forex, indices, shares, and commodities, alongside niche offerings like bonds and interest rates.

  • Tradable asset classes: Forex, global stock indices, company shares, precious metals, energies, soft commodities, treasury bonds, short-term interest rates, and cryptocurrency CFDs.

This extensive catalog of markets is structured as follows:

  • Forex: Traders have access to over 84 currency pairs, which is one of the largest forex catalogs among retail CFD brokers. This includes all major currency pairs, minor crosses, and a diverse range of emerging-market exotic options.
  • Indices: The broker supports CFD trading on over 40 global stock indices, allowing you to buy or sell major baskets like the UK 100, Wall Street, and Germany 40 with spreads starting as low as 1 point.
  • Shares: With thousands of global equities available from major UK, US, European, and Asian exchanges, equity traders have ample opportunities. Additionally, City Index offers extended-hours trading on major US shares (such as Apple, Tesla, and Netflix), allowing you to react instantly to after-hours earnings reports.
  • Commodities: Precious metals like gold and silver trade alongside key energy products (Brent and WTI Crude Oil) and soft commodities like wheat, cocoa, and coffee.
  • Cryptocurrencies: Trading crypto CFDs is supported globally on a handful of major digital assets (such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin); however, they are completely restricted for retail traders in the United Kingdom due to the FCA's strict ban on retail cryptocurrency derivatives.

City Index Leverage, Margin & Order Execution

City Index operates primarily under a market-maker execution model, delivering high-speed execution alongside leverage ratios that range from 1:20 to 1:500 depending on the governing regulatory jurisdiction.

  • Order Execution Model: City Index acts as a direct market maker for all of its 13,500+ assets. The pricing is derived from an internal liquidity pool backed by StoneX's deep institutional relationship networks, ensuring fast execution speeds and high order acceptance rates. Slippage can still occur during highly volatile market conditions, but the broker offers Guaranteed Stop Loss Orders (GSLOs) for a premium to eliminate the risk of negative execution gaps.
  • Regulatory Leverage Limits: Maximum city index leverage is strictly governed by local regulatory authorities to protect retail traders from excessive risk:
    • UK (FCA), Europe (CySEC), and Australia (ASIC): Retail leverage is capped at a maximum of 1:30 for major currency pairs, 1:20 for minor currency pairs, gold, and major indices, 1:10 for commodities, 1:5 for individual shares, and 1:2 for cryptocurrencies (where available).
    • Singapore (MAS): Retail leverage is structurally limited to a maximum of 1:20 for all forex products.
    • Offshore/International (CIMA): Global retail accounts registered under the Cayman Islands entity can trade with maximum leverage up to 1:500.
    • Professional Accounts: Elective professional traders in the UK, Europe, and Australia can bypass retail restrictions to trade with high leverage up to 1:500 on major currency pairs.

City Index Research Tools & Educational Resources

City Index offers an advanced suite of behavioral research tools and educational content, highlighted by its award-winning Performance Analytics dashboard and a comprehensive Trading Academy.

  • Performance Analytics: This proprietary tool acts as a digital trading mentor by automatically analyzing your historical trading data to uncover behavioral biases, track discipline, and identify whether you hold winning trades too briefly or cut losing trades too late.
  • PlayMaker: Integrated directly into the Web Trader platform, this risk-management tool tracks metrics in real time, alerting you when you deviate from your trading plan or exceed your pre-set daily loss limits.
  • Market Research & News: Traders can access live, institutional-grade Reuters news feeds directly within the platform, alongside daily technical and fundamental research articles compiled by City Index's in-house market analysts.
  • Trading Academy: The educational portal features a variety of structured courses, video lessons, and interactive webinars categorised by skill level, making it easy for beginners to learn market basics and for advanced traders to study complex trading systems.

How Good Is City Index Customer Support?

City Index provides highly responsive 24/5 customer support via telephone, email, and live chat, with many users benefiting from dedicated relationship managers.

The customer support team operates from Sunday at 10:00 PM UK time through Friday at 10:00 PM UK time. Retail clients can contact support via a toll-free telephone line, an on-site live chat client, or direct email routing. Response times on the live chat are typically under two minutes, and the support staff is highly trained to handle technical platform queries, deposit issues, and document verification requests. For high-net-worth accounts or active traders, the broker often assigns dedicated relationship managers to provide personalized, prioritized account services.

Who Is City Index Best For?

City Index is highly suited for retail traders and beginners who prioritize advanced analysis tools and low barriers to entry, though it is less optimal for high-frequency scalpers who require razor-thin raw spreads.

Is City Index Good for Beginners?

City Index is an excellent choice for beginners due to its accessible $0 minimum deposit limit and its highly sophisticated suite of behavioral and risk-monitoring tools.

For novice traders, the psychological pressure of funding an account is immediately relieved by the low entry barrier, allowing them to test live execution with micro-lots and small stakes. Once live, beginners benefit from tools like Performance Analytics, which acts as a digital mentor by automatically identifying behavioral mistakes—such as cutting winning trades too quickly while letting losses run. Coupled with the PlayMaker tool, which warns users when they are over-trading or breaching daily risk limits, City Index provides a structured and protective environment that helps new traders develop discipline before risking larger sums of capital.

Is City Index Good for Multi-Asset Day Traders?

City Index is highly effective for multi-asset day traders who require immediate access to global news, advanced charting, and a diverse selection of thousands of tradable instruments from a single screen.

For active intraday traders, having direct access to TradingView's institutional charting engine within the proprietary Web Trader interface means they can perform advanced technical analysis without needing to toggle between different software programs. The integration of real-time Reuters news feeds directly alongside the deal tickets ensures that day traders can capitalize on sudden macroeconomic shifts instantly. Additionally, for traders who want to pivot seamlessly between global stock indices, gold, energies, and individual tech shares, the catalog of over 13,500 markets offers ample opportunity, while extended US trading hours allow them to exploit post-market earnings announcements before the regular stock exchanges open.

Is City Index Good for Scalpers?

City Index is not ideal for high-frequency scalpers who rely on razor-thin spreads and rapid-fire execution inside the bid-ask spread.

Scalping strategies depend heavily on scraping tiny profits from dozens of rapid-fire trades throughout the day, a style of trading that is highly sensitive to transaction friction. Because City Index operates on a spread-only pricing model for forex, its average EUR/USD spread of 0.8 to 1.1 pips is too wide for high-frequency scalpers to remain consistently profitable over time. The lack of a dedicated raw-spread or ECN-style account tier with low commissions means that transaction costs accumulate too quickly, making specialized raw-spread brokers far more cost-effective for this specific trading style.

  • Best for: Beginners seeking behavioral mentorship tools, multi-asset day traders who rely on advanced charting, and equity CFD traders requiring extended US trading hours.
  • Less ideal for: High-frequency scalpers, automated algorithmic traders requiring the MT5 platform, and Sharia-compliant traders.

Compare City Index with Other Popular Brokers

City Index stands out against its direct retail competitors by offering superior behavioral analytics and seamless TradingView integration, although some rivals provide larger asset catalogs and tighter standard spreads.

City Index vs IG

The primary distinction is that IG provides a significantly larger asset catalog and weekend trading features, whereas City Index focuses on advanced behavioral analytics and a lower barrier to entry.

While both brokers hold prestigious tier-1 licenses from the FCA and ASIC, City Index permits a literal $0 minimum deposit in the UK, contrasting with the $300 minimum required by IG for credit card deposits. In terms of trading costs, the competitor offers slightly tighter average spreads of 0.6 pips on EUR/USD; on the other hand, City Index's spreads on the same major pair average around 0.8 pips. The competitor also grants access to over 17,000 global markets, by contrast, City Index limits its catalog to roughly 13,500 instruments.

  • Takeaway: City Index is the better choice for analyzing trading psychology; IG suits high-volume traders wanting maximum market access.

City Index vs CMC Markets

CMC Markets offers a larger proprietary platform asset selection and tighter spreads on stock indices, whereas City Index delivers superior third-party integration and more accessible education.

Both companies operate as heavyweights under FCA and ASIC oversight, yet they structure their trading platforms very differently. CMC Markets provides over 12,000 CFDs on its Next Generation platform with index spreads averaging slightly lower than its rival; by contrast, City Index allows traders to connect their accounts directly to TradingView's premium web charts. Regarding minimum entry limits, the competitor mandates no minimum deposit for its accounts, which aligns directly with City Index's flexible funding structure. However, City Index's overnight financing charges for equity CFDs sit at a standard markup of 2.5%, whereas the competitor operates with a slightly higher benchmark markup.

  • Takeaway: City Index is the better choice for TradingView chart enthusiasts; CMC Markets suits index and commodity specialists.

City Index vs Plus500

Plus500 offers a heavily simplified, beginner-oriented proprietary platform, whereas City Index provides a professional-grade suite that supports MetaTrader 4 and TradingView.

The two brokerages approach client onboarding with distinct styles. Plus500 restricts its trading interface to a basic, proprietary setup with no support for third-party platforms; on the other hand, City Index actively supports advanced MT4 automation and custom API integrations. The competitor imposes a strict $100 minimum deposit threshold, by contrast, City Index operates with a $0 minimum entry requirement in key jurisdictions like the UK. Furthermore, the competitor offers no educational content, whereas City Index features an extensive Trading Academy and advanced performance analytics.

  • Takeaway: City Index is the better choice for analytical and MT4 traders; Plus500 suits absolute beginners who prefer ultra-simple interfaces.

City Index Broker Quick Verdict

City Index is a solid choice for multi-asset day traders and beginners who prioritize advanced behavioral analytics and zero minimum deposit requirements, though high-frequency scalpers will find its spread-only pricing less cost-effective. Ultimately, our City Index review concludes that the broker's regulatory safety under StoneX and integration with TradingView make it a highly secure, modern platform for mainstream traders.

Editorial Transparency

Editorial Transparency: This City Index review is based on information from the official City Index website, current regulatory filings, and independent third-party sources such as Trustpilot. We cross-checked the broker's regulation and license details, account types, trading and non-trading fees, deposit and withdrawal terms, platforms, and real user feedback to ensure accuracy and objectivity. This content is for educational purposes only and does not constitute financial advice; trading CFDs carries a high risk of losing money. Last updated: June 2026.

Trading ASX after hours is a 5 point spread where others offer 1-3 points. Execution can be slow making the open or close price often move after execution to disadvantage. Client service is limited with the usual lip service and no action. Platform can glitch. There are better platforms available.
