Robust U.S. employment data has strengthened market expectations that the Federal Reserve will maintain a hawkish stance throughout the year. The continued resilience of the labor market provides policymakers with room to keep monetary policy restrictive. Meanwhile, escalating tensions in the Middle East have driven energy prices higher, increasing concerns about persistent inflation and further reducing expectations for policy easing.
Against this backdrop, both U.S. Treasury yields and the U.S. dollar moved higher, attracting capital flows into dollar-denominated assets. Supported by stronger-than-expected May Nonfarm Payrolls and ongoing geopolitical uncertainty that has boosted safe-haven demand for the dollar, gold prices came under renewed selling pressure and fell to their lowest level since March. As a non-yielding asset, gold tends to lose relative attractiveness in a rising interest-rate environment, creating an additional headwind for prices.
Technical Analysis
From a technical perspective, gold remains confined within a descending parallel channel and continues to trade below its 200-day moving average, maintaining a bearish daily structure. The MACD remains below the zero line, indicating that bearish momentum continues to dominate. Meanwhile, the Relative Strength Index (RSI) is hovering near the 30 level, suggesting that downside pressure remains intact but is gradually approaching oversold territory.
Overall, gold remains vulnerable to further downside as long as no clear reversal signals emerge. However, with momentum indicators moving deeper into oversold territory, the possibility of a short-term technical rebound cannot be ruled out. Investors should closely monitor the lower boundary of the descending channel and nearby key support zones.
